What kind of people belong to the VFW and what do they do? The VFW is composed of combat veterans who, under the banner of the VFW, carry on a series of programs designed to preserve our liberty and improve the quality of life for all our citizens.
VFW Post 9450 is located in Tokyo, Japan. Our monthly meetings are usually held in the New Sanno Hotel in Hiroo, Shibuya-ku, on the first Saturday of every month. For those of you who are interested in becoming a VFW member, please view the 'Membership Eligibility' page to verify your eligibility. We've made it even easier for you to join. Just fill out our on-line application form, print it, sign it, and bring it to our next scheduled meeting at the New Sanno, or click on 'Join' and fill out the form to have a member contact you.
| Go for the gold... |
|
| How is our Post doing? Since January 2003, our member and non-member volunteers have donated 8082.2 hours and 43714.13 dollars worth of their time, money and skills to projects supporting our community, comrades and country. Check out some of the Awards we've garnered. |
VFW members strongly
support programs that emphasize Patriotism. In parades on
Independence Day and Veterans Day, at special flag raisings and
dedications, in classrooms teaching this value: it is very probable
that members of the VFW will be
there. The Community Service endeavors
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary goes well
beyond the realm of 'Veterans Helping Veterans' (See info on our National Home for Children effort).
We contribute to
country and communities as well, in addition to supporting humanitarian
services in other countries.
Annually, the VFW sponsors unique 'Voice of Democracy' programs in high schools to encourage students to learn to respect the principles that we hold dear. Younger children are offered opportunities to participate in Essay and Poster contests. We also sponsor 'Lite-A-Tyke' and 'Lite-A-Bike' programs in the local schools in an effort to safeguard the children in our community. If you are aware of a school that would like to benefit from one of these programs, please let us know via the E-mail link at the bottom of this page.
Some of the membership and almost all
of the public are unaware of our accomplishments. The following are
the annual figures for a past year, except for the Disaster Relief
Fund.
Community
Service projects provided nearly 12,600,000 hours of volunteer
service. VFW and Auxiliary members spent or donated nearly $55
million to complete these projects.
The Voice of
Democracy provided more than $2.7 million in college
scholarships.
The Ladies
Auxiliary collected more than $3 million for cancer research ($44
million over the past 44 years).
The Buddy
Poppy program raised more than $15 million that is used for
service programs and relief for needy veterans.
Boy Scout
troops were available through 1,234 Posts, providing activities
for more than 30,000 boys.
Athletic
teams in major sports were sponsored by 10,900 Posts for tens of
thousands of youngsters .
March of
Dimes WalkAmerica VFW teams raised more than $100,000.
Thousands of
hours of volunteer work were devoted to Homeless Veterans Service
Programs in addition to monetary donations.
In joint
venture with AARP, over 1,000 driver refresher courses were
conducted for senior citizens.
The VFW
National Disaster Relief Fund provided more than $894,000 since
1964. This is in addition to all the moneys, food and material
provided by individuals, Posts and Departments. Some Posts have
opened up their Post homes to accommodate hurricane and flood
victims. The volunteer work in rebuilding the disaster areas is
valued in the millions of dollars.
The VFW is part of Connect America, a U.S. national movement of like-minded organizations working together for the betterment of their communities and to encourage individual Americans to do the same.
